King’s College London has been given a Silver Award in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2017, a new scheme which aims to recognise and reward excellent learning and teaching in higher education.
The TEF Panel reviewed the submission by King’s which highlighted the university’s strong performance in achieving excellent student outcomes, with the most recent data showing 86 per cent of full-time and 100 per cent of part-time students were in graduate-level employment or further study six months after graduating.
The TEF Panel recognised the range of effective programmes at King’s that support the development of students’ skills and employability, the university’s strong commitment to widening participation, its investment in the physical and digital learning environment and the institution’s efforts to recognise and reward excellent teaching.
However, the TEF Panel also noted that students’ overall perceptions of the quality of assessment and feedback and the provision of academic support were notably below benchmark. King’s recognises that improvements in these areas are required and a comprehensive set of measures have been implemented to address these.
Professor Ed Byrne, AC, President and Principal of King’s said: “With some of the world’s best educators, researchers and students, we are very proud of the educational experience offered at King’s. Our submission to the TEF demonstrated the real ways our students benefit from enrolling in a diverse, civically-minded, and interdisciplinary university.
“This award is a fair reflection of the progress we have made in enhancing the student experience at King’s, though more work needs to be done to ensure we continue to improve the quality of our educational provision.
“Whilst we are supportive of the aims of the TEF and wholeheartedly endorse its ambition to enhance teaching quality, robust and credible measures of excellence will take time to develop through rigorous piloting, review and refinement.
“We chose to participate in the TEF in order to help make improvements to the framework. Both the university and our Students’ Union agree that the TEF metrics are not, in their current form, appropriate measures for improving educational quality and that the use of benchmarks does not encourage or recognise year-on-year improvements.
“We fully respect the Student Union’s wish to not engage at this time with the TEF, and recognise that they chose to boycott the National Student Survey. We will continue to work in partnership with our students to improve the student experience.
“King’s will be actively engaged with the formal lessons learned exercise following this pilot, to help shape the future development of TEF and ensure the metrics used provide an accurate measure of the quality of teaching and learning in higher education.”
