Enabling adult non-singers to sing: A workshop for practitioners

GuildhallSchool Red

Applications are invited for a free workshop day on the ‘Finding A Voice’ project at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Friday 5 January. This interactive workshop is for people passionate about helping adult non-singers find their voices, and actively working with non-singing adults in any setting.

The AHRC-funded ‘Finding a Voice’ project, led by Karen Wise at Guildhall School of Music & Drama, is holding a workshop on Friday 5 January, 11.30-18.00 (19.00 with social).

Are you passionate about helping non-singing adults find their voices? Do you lead or teach singing for total beginners and the ‘singing terrified’?  Or perhaps you run vocal activities for health and wellbeing, or a community choir for all…

If you carry out vocal activities with non-singers in any setting – including community, health, singing groups, and private practice – we invite you to join us to explore the unique challenges and issues involved. You don’t need to be professionally trained/qualified yourself but it will be helpful if you can read music. The workshop incorporates:

  • an opportunity to hear about the project and emerging insights from the research
  • practical activities with teachers from the project
  • latest scientific and educational research on singing in an accessible, practice- relevant format
  • opportunity to think about and discuss a range of issues, from pitching difficulties to overcoming inhibitions
  • a friendly forum to share experiences with other practitioners

Workshop leaders: Professor Linda Hutchison, Jenni Roditi, Lucy Legg and William Leigh Knight, Dr Karen Wise.

To apply contact Beth Martin, findingavoice@gsmd.ac.uk, by 10 December, telling us a bit about yourself and why you would like to attend. For more information see www.gsmd.ac.uk/findingavoice.
