This is a badge making workshop around period poverty, menstruation based on a Girl Guiding campaign.
Considering menstruation and poverty remain relatively taboo, this workshop asks participants to create images and narratives that disrupt dominant discourses around ‘period poverty’ and hook into the crafting and visual cultures of contemporary feminist activism.
This workshop will be run by Sara De Benedictis, a Lecturer in Media and Communications at Brunel University London. Sara’s research interests are in gender, class, reproduction, austerity and popular culture. Her ESRC funded PhD in Cultural Studies (2016) at King’s College London explored representations of, and reactions to, birth under austerity Britain.
Prior to joining Brunel, Sara was a research assistant at the London School of Economics and Political Sciences working on a project about stay-at-home mothers and a Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham on the Wellcome Trust funded project, Televising Childbirth. Sara is currently working on a project that investigates mediations and experiences of ‘period poverty’ in the UK.

Opening dialogues around the challenges diversity offers to theories and practices in visual and online cultures, our intersectional Valentine combines short interdisciplinary and interactive workshops to provoke questions on the diversity of images, diversity in themes and the making of visual and online cultures. Taking place on the 14th of February, we position Diversity and Disruption as an alternative love event, which additionally considers connectivity, digital intimacy, intersectionality and representation in the post-digital age.
